Moi’s picks for 2023

2023 was a year that I think shook many people in various ways: former president Lump facing a plethora of criminal charges, the queen’s passing, a nosey billionaire submarine implosion, and war on the horizon yet again. Sure, social media makes all of this seem like something we can laugh at and scroll past but it is also somewhat unsettling how desensitized we have become to major events that would once upon a time shake the world. A line that comes to mind, I’m sure we’ve ALL heard more than once in recent times, “leave politics out of it” but how can we when politics define the laws of the landscape we inhabit and the art created in it.

Struggle, pain, anger, suffering have inspired the creation of deeply touching art for as long as art has been documented, and 2023 was no different.

Not unlike most years, I bet you started out starry eyed and ready to try something new or difficult once more… I’m sure as the year progressed we all found (or tried to) some thing(s) to look forward to. Often, all it takes is an inspiring body of work made by somebody who may have gone through or experienced some thing(s) we feel alone in. 2023 was full of music for the sentimental and emotionally ran through (Don’t worry, there was plenty of room for fun too).
